Benvenuto Cellini (Florence, 1500 - 1571) was an Italian sculptor, goldsmith, writer, silversmith and artist, considered one of the most important Mannerist artists.
He trained very young at the workshops of famous goldsmiths in Florence, dedicating himself, at the behest of his father Giovanni, engineer and musician, also to the study of music.
The precocious ability of goldsmith soon made him famous: he worked in Rome for a long period (1519-40), protected by Clement VII, for which he elaborated seals, coins, medals etc.
Upon his return to Florence, well received by Cosimo I, he had the important Perseus commission for the Loggia dei Lanzi, built (1545-54) with a perfect casting technique, the work presents in the bronze statue of the protagonist.
